Kyoto: Cafe Cheka 菓子・茶房 チェカ

It was tea time after visiting the Van Gogh exhibition at the Kyoto Municipal Museum. Onward to Cafe Cheka which was found from one of the Kyoto travel magazines at the guesthouse.

This cafe was a short walking distance away from the crowded area of the museum and Heian Shrine. It was a small 2-storey cafe. There was the bakery and takeaway counter on the 1st floor. The sitting area was on the 2nd. If dining in, simply order the cake/confectionery at the counter on the 1st floor before heading to the 2nd. Had wanted a seat by the window but, disappointingly, it was taken. Nevertheless, the next jap-style option was the tatami-floored seating.

Had ordered a "cake" and an ice tea. The whole presentation is so zen. The "cake" was actually tiramisu in the unlikely shape of a donut. Made of tiramisu ingredients (I guessed) but not like the typical. Here, it was not sweet, the taste was not a mish-mash of the typical tiramisu dessert. However, there was still several textures... the soft cake, bittersweet coffee jelly, the hard chopped nuts on the surface. Couldn't identify if really like this but it was definitely very intriguing.
